Drake Beats All Expectations at Nationals
Sophie Drake, aged 15, of Canvey Island Swimming Club took
swimming to a new level for the Island club, at this year’s
Age Group Nationals in Sheffield. Qualifying for two events,
she made the finals of both 100m Backstroke and 50m Freestyle.
Drake took the pressure in her stride, to give her best
and to make a good impression at her first ever Age Group
National Championships.
Sophie's first event was the 100m Backstroke. From the
start, Sophie applied the power and speed to finish the
heat in 1st place, achieving both a place in the semi finals
and a County Record, in a time of 1.06.61. The semi final
was just as hard, as the 20 semi-finalists were soon reduced
down to 10. Drake qualifying in 9th place and swimming in
Lane 10 again swam with full power and finished a well-deserved
6th place.
With one final out of the way, Drake was soon swimming in
her second final, which was the 50m freestyle. With a new
personal best time of 27.67 secs, Drake was looking for
a top three placing. Swimming in lane 8, all eyes were on
the result board, as separating whom touched first was hard
to tell. With only three tenths of a second separating Drake
from a medal position, she came away very proud with her
achievements over the 2 days.
Congratulations and well done Sophie.

Canvey Island SC Challenges Olympians
Sophie Drake of Canvey Island Swimming
Club travelled north to Liverpool, to compete in the National
Long Course Championships; and found not only was Sophie
competing against all age’s, but Olympians.
Entered in the 50m backstroke, Sophie knew just qualifying
was an achievement at the age of 15, but there was the added
pressure of swimming against the world’s best; not
only from Great Britain, but also the French National Team
and other European Countries, were there to impress before
their departure to Beijing.
Swimming in heat 3, lane 7, Sophie could see the level of
competition, as the world record holder and GB Olympian,
Georgia Davies was in lane 4, and with GB Olympians Katy
Sexton and Gemma Spofforth having already swam in heats
1 & 2 the race was going to be very fast.
Sophie had the perfect start, and the race was on to touch
first, 25 metres into the race Sophie was laying 5th in
the 8 lane pool and with the power being applied Sophie
touched in a very deserving 4th place in 31.80 seconds,
placing her 14th o/a out of the 28 entry’s.
This being Sophie’s first national event, Sophie is
now setting her sights on the Age Group National Championships
to be held at the end of the month in Sheffield, competing
in the 100 metre Backstroke and 50 metre Freestyle.

Block A County Championships, Blackshots in Thurrock
results
Canvey’s swimmers competed in the first
program of the 2008 County Championships and what a weekend
it proved to be for them and the club! Bethan McElroy lead the
charge on day one reaching the finals of all four of her 50m
events only just missing podium finishes on each occasion. A
mention must also be made of Eva Power who has just started
swimming at the club and managed an extremely creditable 12th
place in her first swim at this level. Maisie Jones and Lauren
McElroy again produced great swims in the 11 year old age group
with Kate Thompson obtaining a PB in the 50m Freestyle at the
13 year old level. More great swims were achieved by the boys
with Craig Johnston leading the way by making his Eastern region
time in the 50m free and the fabulous Baker boys producing great
times yet again.
However, the best was left to the Girls' Captain,
Sophie Drake who won gold medals in the 50m Free, obtaining
her National qualification time, 50m back and silver in the
50m Fly. Sophie also broke/equalled 2 long standing County records.
Onto day two where again Canvey’s swimmers produced more
great swims. Alyson Moran retained her 50m Breastroke crown
by winning the gold medal in a time of 35.63 and PB’s
were broken by Hannah Packman in all three of her 50m events,
Jodie Moran and Kirstie Fehily. The boys again fared well with
great swims from John Bushell, Nathan McCabe, Todd Harding and

Long Course Regional Championships, Norwich
Well
done to Sophie Drake who had a spectacular sprint race in the
50 meters backstroke. Seeded only 9th on the programme, Sophie
Drake aged 14, started well with a 2nd place in the Junior Section
taken from the heat placing, but this only put her as 7th fastest
qualifier for the combined Senior/Junior final. In the finals
Sophie was back into the water in lane 1 with the International
and GB swimmer Zoe Cray aged 33 from Teamipswich in lane 4.
This didn't put Sophie off and almost from the start all swimmers
came to the surface at the same time. Zoe headed forward with
every stroke leaving the other 7 competitors fighting for the
remaining Silver and Bronze places. 15 seconds, and 25 meters
into the race and with arms flying Sophie was edging ahead of
the rest of the lanes, the chase was on to catch Zoe. Sophie
just touched in second place with a personal best time of 32.04
gaining the Silver medal. On the same day, Sophie also competed
in the 50meters freestyle, and again beating her personal best
time, Long Course, finishing in 29.36 seconds.

Wycombe District Long Course BC Meet, High Wycombe
A
small but dedicated (if slightly bleary eyed) team consisting
of Abigail & Daniel Lee and Lauren & Liam McElroy were
supported by Jody “Kick!” Owen-Hughes* and the CISC
support team - that’s parents in old money! Long Course
means a 50 metre pool which is technically twice the length
of our pool but actually appears to be miles longer, especially
if you haven’t swum in one before. Our team were undeterred
by this fact and prepared for their first taste of long course
with gusto. The meet consisted of 3 sessions, covering both
50 & 100 metre races. The day got off to a good start with
the girls both getting medals in their respective first events
with the boys pacing themselves. All events were very competitive
and each of them made a big effort attaining a mixture of PB’s
and medals. The medal table (in alphabetical order): Abigail
2 x Gold; Daniel 2 x Silver; Lauren 2 x Silver, 1 x Bronze;
Liam 1 x Silver. Well done to all four, and to make this achievement
even better these were the first medals that Abigail & Daniel
have won since swimming for the club.
