The afternoon’s swimming opened with 10year old Emily Woods swimming to a fine PB time and securing herself a final slot, she would finish just outside the medals in 4th place but a fine swim none the less, 12 year old Hannah Travell and 13 year old Becky Booty were also in the 200m freestyle with both girls putting in good efforts but finishing just outside their best times. Luke Durban swam another fine race in his 200m Backstroke event and made another final he would improve his position again in the final to finish a very creditable 7th. David Fryatt was another to contest the backstroke and swam a solid effort on his return from injury. Sunday’s swimming would see Ole Mills return for his 100m Breaststroke event where once again he would set a fine new Pb and just miss out of the finals finishing in 9th place.

Hannah Travell and Becky Booty were once again in attendance with both girls competing in the 200m Individual Medley, Hannah would make reserve finalist whilst Becky would put in a solid effort to finish well inside the top twenty in her age group. The swim of the morning came from Luke Durban who smashed his lifetime best and gained qualification for the national championships in his 400m I/M event, his swim moved him up several places to collect a fantastic Bronze medal. Not to be outdone in the same event Tom Mclagan also made a significant move up the rankings to finish in a very good 8th place whilst also lowering his previous best time. The final afternoon saw Luke Durban again set a PB to qualify for another final this time in the 200m Butterfly he couldn’t improve upon his heat time or position in finishing 8th, but he can be pleased with his fine swimming over both weekends. The girls 100m Backstroke would see Emily Woods ease into the finals in a very good time, she couldn’t quite match this in the final but picked up another Bronze medal for her collection, in the same event Becky Booty had arguably her best swim of the championships turning in a fine swim to improve her entry position.

The girl’s 100m Freestyle was well represented with four girls taking part. Once again Emily Woods would make a final however she would be denied a medal by one place to collect 4th place but consolation was a good PB. Thirteen year olds Becky Booty and Emily Bulleid both swam well with Emily in particular looking good, she would win her heat despite being ranked below her competition, her swim would move her up several places from her entry position whilst Becky should be pleased with her swimming competing for the first time at this level. Hannah Travell was the other swimmer in this event; she qualified in 5th place from the heats into her age group final, she would put the disappointment of her previous swims behind her and show her determination to pick up a bronze medal whilst going much quicker in the final.

A fine two weekends of competition at this high level would see the swimmers collect a total of 8 medals coupled with over a dozen final appearances, this shows a very good return for the swimmers and the coaching staff who have all worked hard during the season.

A fine first day saw the club collect 3 silver medals.

Sunday’s swimming would see more finals and more medals with Luke and Tom being joined by Orin Mann for the boys 200m Individual Medley event. Orin improved his entry position by 10 places to be 15th overall whilst Tom continued his fine swimming, whilst Luke would make the final as 2nd fastest from the heats, he would have to settle for 3rd place and a Bronze medal from his final but this fine swim would see his fine weekend continue.

The afternoon would see Hannah Travell back in the pool this time in the 200m Butterfly, she would qualify as 4th fastest from the heats. Orin Mann and Luke Durban would both also qualify for the finals in their respective age groups in the 100m Freestyle. Braintree and Bocking Swimming Club - Based in Essex Covering Braintree, Witham, Halstead, Colchester and Chelmsford Speedo 2007-2008 Round 1 - Results & News

Congratulations to all our swimmers on an excellent round 1 at Bexleyheath. In a closely fought event Braintree came 2nd to Dorking. Building on the progress made last season Braintree continued their improvemet. There was some some great swimming and team spirit, plenty of PBs and a well deserved result.

It was the younger swimmers who provided the platform for the evening, winning many of the relay and individual events. The senior girls backed this up, with the highlight being the final relay event, Rachel Firth, Meagan Costin, Hayley Brown, Amy Shambrook and Shelley Wakeling gave Helen Mitchell the opportunity to hold off Dorking in an exciting finnish.

Thanks to all Dorking for hosting and to all those Braintree parents who helped.

Final positions:
Dorking 236
Braintree & Bocking 221
Canterbury B 181
Edenbridge Piranhas 136
Croydon Amphibians B 135
Erith & District B 121

Congratulations to Alice
misses out on final by narrowest of margins.

Alice Hickmott travelled to Ponds Forge ISC, Sheffield to compete in the 100 & 200m backstroke events at the ASA National Age Group Championships. The best swimmers in the country were there and Alice showed no nerves as she set a new personal best time in the 100m backstroke and was unlucky to miss out by 1 position and 0.01s on a place in the final.

Head Coach Steve Hall summarised it by saying that this was a great experience for the club to see, first hand, just what is required to reach the next level. It serves to remind the us that there is no short cut to training. If you want to compete with the best you have to be thorough in your preparation and maintain focus throughout the season.

Four Braintree swimmers made the trip to Runnymede to compete in their annual Sprint Gala. The effort was well worthwhile, with Matthew Horne setting 3 PBs as he claimed a first and two third places. Philip Hart matched the number of PBs and won the backstroke, was second in the fly and sixth in freestyle. Joseph Parmenter set new PBs in the 100 and 50 freestyle events. Sophie Howard set new PBs and collected two medals in the 100 freestyle and 50 back.

Winning End to Regional Championships

Braintree were superbly represented at the Regional BAGCAT championships held at UEA Norwich. The second and final weekend fininshed in style for Braintree. Grace Baukham and Helen Mitchell both set new PBs in the 1500m freestyle with Helen clinching a top 6 finish. David Fryatt had an exceptional time setting substantial PBs in every event he entered and with top 6 finishes in the 100 fly, 200 fly and 400IM. Hannah Travell finished off her weekend with a blistering swim in the 100m freestyle to claim 4th place. Alice Hickmott finished the championships the way she started, with a gold medal and another national time. This was in the 100m backstroke where she led from start to finish. Full results here.

The first weekend of competition had seen Tom McLagen comprehensively better his PBs in the 400 & 800m freestyle events. Hannah Travell, Lewis Birks & David Fryatt followed suit to reap the rewards of their hard work in the training pool.

Alice Hickmott struck gold in the 200m backstroke event when she led from start to finish to win in a national qualifying time. This in a week when she had been selected to represent her County in the forthcoming Inter-Counties meet.

Braintree Top Club at Colchester Open Meet
Winners of Reg Baines Memorial Trophy

The resurgence of Braintree continued when a small squad of swimmers competed in the annual Colchester Open Meet, returning with a large number of individual medals, meet records and the Reg Baines Memorial Trophy for the top visiting club. In total there were 40 top 6 finishes of which 25 were top 3.

Matthew Horne and Max Palmer Everson swam superbly for the boys collecting 5 first places between them. Becky Booty and Sophie Howard both helped to boost the points tally, whilst Rachel Firth was placed in the top 3 in all five of her events.

Overall this was a very useful outing for the squad as the majority prepare for the forthcoming Regional championships. Full meet results can be found here.
